ViTO is distributed as an executable for LINUX (compiled on RedHat 9 but it should work with other versions). The archive is a gzipped tarball that you need to unpack. Further installation instructions are available in the README file.
An executable for WINDOWS compiled using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 is also available in ZIP format. To install uncompress the archive. The executable is vito_windows.exe. Please be aware of this: under windows NEVER use Microsoft word or any other fancy word processor to edit your alignments file or PDB structure files because ViTO deals only with text files and that these programs tranform text files. Edit your alignments with notepad or textpad.
vito_mac.tar.gz (works under MAC OS 10 - a X11 server is required !!)
If you encounter any problem during the installation feel free to send an e-mail to catrino@cbs.cnrs.fr
Anyway it is a good idea to send an e-mail (with VITO download as subject) once you have ViTO installed on your computer because you will recieve an e-mail each time a new version will become available. If you fail to install ViTO on your computer or if it doesn't work, I can provide the source code and makefiles for LINUX, but you will have to modify these makefiles for your computer. This is not recommended unless you know what you are doing or you know somebody who does.
ViTO is distributed in the hope that it will be useful and I will be happy to recieve remarks, bugs reports and suggestions from users. It is planned to provide a Mac OS X version. For other UNIX systems it won't be possible because we don't have anything else than LINUX in the laboratory.
ViTO has been developped in C with OpenGL for the 3D rendering and TCL/Tk for the GUI.
